Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) is a disease caused by a virus called Bovine Herpes Virus-1 (BHV-1 or BoHV-1). IBR can cause a range of clinical signs in cattle, including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Fever
  • Abortion (uncommon)
  • Milk drop
  • Death

IBR is widespread in UK. Data from 1650 farms over the last 2 years, using MSD’s Expertis™ BeefCheck and DairyCheck diagnostic schemes shows that over 50% of non-vaccinating herds are antibody positive for IBR, and have been exposed to the disease. The virus that causes IBR is highly infectious and spreads rapidly, especially when cattle are moved.
